Feature Rating Results

Scores are rough interpretations from the tick chart on the forms, with -4 equivalent to "Hate it" and 4 to "Love it". Positive scores are shown with a blue bar and negative scores with a red bar.

1. Drop-in cafe style gathering place
drinks Feature graphical indicator for question 12.2
opening Feature graphical indicator for question 12.7
seating Feature graphical indicator for question 13.6
Comments
  • Good for the "teens" in the village - once a week sessions (Wii/Xboxes/chance to chat?)
  • Wine bar / bistro / tea-room
  • Monday Mardle is sufficient. Nothing more needed.
  • Outdoor seating in summer be great!
  • Seems similar to the Mardle - could Mardle meet more frequently?
  • Good for 'teens' - need to make sure machine is refilled regularly!
  • "Regular" not "frequent"?
  • Better to have informal gatherings in peoples' own homes. Nice idea but financially impractical.
  • Newspapers / Magazines 1 afternoon per week when drinks are made and cakes sold to make real cafe feel
  • There is the Mardle already.
  • Home made cakes - newspapers - Good quality toys for children
  • Absolutely lovely idea - which used to be encompassed by village shop. HOWEVER, working peoples' lives means not likely regular useage

2. Mums & Tots
drinks Feature graphical indicator for question 23.3
input Feature graphical indicator for question 23
instruments Feature graphical indicator for question 22
opening Feature graphical indicator for question 22.8
seating Feature graphical indicator for question 23.4
toys Feature graphical indicator for question 23.1
Comments
  • Not applicable (There is a Play Group that probably takes care of most Tots)
  • Music group would be great!
  • Springboard nursery at village hall suffices
  • Link with drop-in-cafe: it would be good to have somewhere to bring tots & meet others who might also be 'child-minding'
  • There already is one but on a day we cannot make.

3. Prayer / Bible Study Groups

Comments
  • Already enough happening with Christianity Explored at Chapel & Alpha at Church, etc.
  • Already go to one but good idea to have in village
  • Already enough.
  • Could link with this be made with Ian Masson?

4. Youth Provision
discussion Feature graphical indicator for question 43.1
dropin Feature graphical indicator for question 42.5
input Feature graphical indicator for question 42.4
outings Feature graphical indicator for question 42.6
pool Feature graphical indicator for question 42.1
tuck Feature graphical indicator for question 41.4
video_games Feature graphical indicator for question 41
Comments
  • Past initiatives usually fizzled out after year or two as interest wanes.
  • There is a scouts group. School and scouts should be asked.
  • Do not need duplication - Explorers at Chapel for 5-11s and 12-18s & Scout & Guide centre is enough
  • What is "structured input"!?
  • There has been thriving youth club in the past. Equipment still available.
  • Need to encourage this age group as church of future
  • Scouts, etc. already in existence. Better to support them and not look as though we are in competition with them.
  • Proper supervision essential - so casual drop-in not good.
  • It would have to be evening because of school/college
  • Age of helpers need to be younger than me! But could help with workshops - craft, desgn, etc.

5. Children Provision
dropin Feature graphical indicator for question 53.5
games Feature graphical indicator for question 51
input Feature graphical indicator for question 53.9
outings Feature graphical indicator for question 53
tuck Feature graphical indicator for question 52.3
video_games Feature graphical indicator for question 50.3
Comments
  • Good for those who live in village but attend other schools, to get to know others in the village
  • Play Group mothers should be asked.
  • Already exists in village - encouragement to USE might be good!
  • What are "interactive games"?
  • Best for children to be in care of individual adult after school.
  • This would be great. Very little in village for them, and parents spend a lot of time ferrying children to "classes" elsewhere

6. Live Music Events in Church
classical Feature graphical indicator for question 63.1
local Feature graphical indicator for question 61.9
modern Feature graphical indicator for question 62.8
other Feature graphical indicator for question 63.9
rehearsal Feature graphical indicator for question 61.8
Comments
  • Not sure - already covered as part of Creative Arts type events? Prefer to head into Norwich.
  • Jazzangles looking for 50/50 profits venue in S. Norfolk. Space in church may be too small though.
  • We have many young musicians in the village - everything from drums to trumpet
  • Jazz?
  • Anything musical, some performance arts, craft/art exhibition space
  • Groups of people from other churches taking part in services (young/ mid age). Lots talent in village so rehearsal space might be useful - modern music - not jazz!
  • A delicate balance between using the church space for the good of the whole community (not just dozen or so regular attendees) & respecting its core function
  • Exhibitions of art, craft, etc.
  • Rehearsal space provision in church is good idea - but who would use it?
  • Beautiful church and under-used. Could we have more chapel services in the church, and vice versa - e.g. "mix and visit"?

7. Traditional Services

quiet Feature graphical indicator for question 72.6
spoken -2.2Feature graphical indicator for question 7
warm Feature graphical indicator for question 73.6
welcome Feature graphical indicator for question 73.8
Comments
  • Any kind of service that allows for prayer & learning, rather than following a set pattern/order
  • Short mid-week service after work 6:30ish? - high level of thought/challenge in sermon is welcome
  • 8am probably best in summer
  • Only appeals to certain people - but is needed. Well known hymns are fine - but more modern would be good.
  • When no service scheduled in Saxlingham (or Evensong, so some older ones can't come, I suggest a "cafe style" informal service in the church room (morning)
  • Prefer Authorised Version of Bible
  • Maybe Christmas Day at 8am, otherwise no to that.
  • I admire the choir's commitment hugely - but have always felt v. uncomfortable about their contribution & at times, domination, of the service. We are all there to worship God in thought, word and song. Teaching from the Bible MUST be at the centre of worship.
  • Variety of services - some BCP

8. All Age Services
allage Feature graphical indicator for question 83.5
bible Feature graphical indicator for question 83

engaging Feature graphical indicator for question 83.8
interactivity Feature graphical indicator for question 83.2
modern Feature graphical indicator for question 83.5
puppets Feature graphical indicator for question 81.2
relaxed Feature graphical indicator for question 83.8
Comments
  • Where you develop real friendships with others
  • Alternate 9:30 and 11 times are good
  • once or twice or month is OK - need a mix of types of service
  • Modern worship songs, but not the too-repetitive versions
  • What are"interactivity" and "engaging with current affairs"?
  • How about "Sunday School", with parents and children together - not a "service" but a religion based play school with stories and quiet games.
  • Can't bear phrase, "All Age" - surely ALL church services should be for all! I guess you mean more child-friendly. Bringing children to church for post-school activities can work well. For non-church-going families, Sunday is often a busy day.
  • Variety is good - puppets good for children but might go down so well with adults
  • Puppets good but not every time. A coffee/newspaper space for 'dads' to hang out in if not interested in service A drama team instead of puppets all the time?
  • Why has chapel congregation grown so much in last 20 yrs? Continuity of minister (Cf church with 5 in last decade or so)? Feeling of allegiance? Above all, welcoming by all and sundry when you go in. There's a difference between "polite" and "warm"!
  • Anything to get folk into God's house - within reason!

9. Bring & Take Events
annual Feature graphical indicator for question 92.1
thrice Feature graphical indicator for question 92.3
Comments
  • Not sure - might require lots of storage space. Could charity collect what isn't taken to overcome this? Better for PC or PCC to organise local freecycle style website, where villagers can post items they don't want for collection by others. Reminder could accompany each month's contact.
  • Better to give good to charity shops or save them for the fete.
  • Might kill white elephant stall at fete
  • Maybe rotate around different venues to attract different folk - church/school/chapel?

10. Men's Breakfasts
continental Feature graphical indicator for question 101.8
cooked Feature graphical indicator for question 100.7
hall Feature graphical indicator for question 102.3
sat_am Feature graphical indicator for question 102.2
speakers Feature graphical indicator for question 102.2
Comments
  • Why just men?
  • Can't see this getting interest.
  • Good idea in theory - mid-week would attract retired gents and weekends better for working men. Be good to include fathers and sons. Wouldn't want to be too frequent - monthly maximum
  • Why single sexed?!
  • People don't have time on a Saturday morning to stop for much breakfast.
  • It would have to be weekends - many people (not only men) leave for work 7-7:30am
  • Needs kitchen facilities, so have to be village hall
  • Lovely idea but don't know howmany 'family' men would attend?
  • Maybe scout hut?

11. Special Interest Speakers
banquet -0.2Feature graphical indicator for question 11

local Feature graphical indicator for question 112.9
meal Feature graphical indicator for question 112.3
varied Feature graphical indicator for question 113.5
visiting Feature graphical indicator for question 113.4
Comments
  • Not needed - already have talks in Tuesday Circle, WEA courses, artists' group, Scouts, gardening and wildlife - don't want more
  • Maybe already provision - garden club, Tuesday circle, etc.
  • Who would organise this one?
  • We have some groups who have speakers (e.g. Tuesday Circle) so need to liaise to avoid overlap - & lots of work to book, arrange and follow up. Need some new, younger people in village to join in.

12. Ladies' Lunches
cooked Feature graphical indicator for question 121.9
hall Feature graphical indicator for question 121.9
light Feature graphical indicator for question 122.2
visiting Feature graphical indicator for question 123.1
Comments
  • Just an hour - 12noon-1pm OR 1pm-2pm
  • Less frequent & more indulgent would be better. perhaps twice yearly, including spa/ swim/ ski/ tennis beforehand? Inject some fun - and pampering!
  • Good for retirement activity!
  • Mardle should be asked - they sometimes have lunches.
  • Timing would impact potential clientele
  • Why single sexed?!
  • 4 per year. If numbers below 30, can be accommodated in church room.
  • As long as doesn't turn out to be usual half dozen suspects!
  • Might attend for light lunch if visiting speaker of special interest
  • Tuesday Circle is a ladies group, which meets monthly for scoialising/speakers. Works well for 'older ladies' - not sure if younger mums would enjoy this.
  • Weekdays - not Wednesdays

13. Quiet Space

music Feature graphical indicator for question 133
prayer Feature graphical indicator for question 132.9
seating Feature graphical indicator for question 133.4
warmth Feature graphical indicator for question 133.4
Comments
  • No need. Walking in countryside around village offers this perfectly.
  • Lots of places in Saxlingham & surrounds exist already for this
  • Doubt there is a call. There are already quiet spaces and dog walks in the village and the church is open so this is an ideal place.
  • Our Church??
  • The church is wonderful for quiet meditation.
  • Church is good for quiet "sit" - but it is cold at times. Cold but inspirationally beautiful.

Comments
  • Could use meadow at playing field? Showcase for local suppliers - farmers' market element?
  • Car park venue seems to work well
  • Church car park works well.
  • Bouncy castle, etc. please
  • Should ocmbine with other groups to make a bigger affair: e.g. church, chapel, village hall, cricket club, bowls club, etc. - get EVERYONE involved and share the proceeds.
  • Would local businesses pay for stall or %age of profits? Is this 'church fete'? Proceeds to village or church or both?
  • Rectory garden lovely idea BUT impractical due to transport problems.
  • More recruits to help with fete would be very acceptable.
  • We draw good crowd as it is "Games" seem to be dying out, which is a shame. Teenagers & young adults could supervise games for children - prizes of course.
  • A lot of hard work for a few, but raises huge amount of money and much appreciated by village. Car park location works well, but rectory garden might be intrusive for vicar's family.
  • Bouncy castle? Good quality but used 'toy stall' Ice creams - vanilla, choc & strawberry please!
  • Business stalls might be good, but depends what they are. Car park is bigger, but not as good as Old Hall or Rectory venues of old. Car park is too windy, exposed, and higgledy-piggledy. BUT, need space for "throwing the welly" & other ancient pastimes.

General Comments

  • Discussion after church services - output/input on vicar's sermons!
  • How about baby-sitting circles, using sytem of tokens/credits? A village gym - some fitness equipment in the church? meditate as you row?
  • A public house / wine bar would be vital asset to village
  • Wednesday toddler group is good, but it would be great to have a few more family activities on the weekends, especially in the summer.
  • We realise something has to be done to increase church attendance. There is nothing quite like a full church.
  • Some items already covered in village.
  • Really good you are doing this!
  • Well done for getting us thinking!
  • Well done! Working lives hinder being able to help very much for many in the village, but weekend activities are great and living here it behoves ALL of us to do our bit to keep alive the traditions and feeling of a village as a place of community in every sense of the word. Please do your bit!
